Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program, which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in the community. The program involves neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance. Citizens are trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhood. They also learn how to implement crime prevention techniques such as home security etc.
Neighborhood Watch is not a group of vigilantes taking the law into their own hands. Citizens are strongly discouraged from apprehending suspects or enforcing the law. The program focuses on having the citizens be the eyes and ears of the police department.
Neighborhood Watch also involves security inspections and Operation Identification. Kenai Police Department personnel at the citizen's request conduct security inspections. The officer will inspect doors, locks, windows, lighting and landscaping etc and make a recommendation to the homeowner of how to "target harden" their homes so burglars will move on to an easier target.
Operation Identification involves taking an inventory of all valuable personal belongings and marking the belongings with the owners Alaska Driver's license number. Photos of the property can also be taken. The Kenai Police Department has engravers available for check out.
